Phytoliths
Phytoliths are particles of silica formed in inflorescences, stems, leaves and roots of many plants.
Many plant taxa have distinctive phytolith types. The silica is taken
up into the plant as silicic acid in ground water. Being inorganic,
phytoliths may remain intact in soils and other deposits for long
periods after the plant has died and decomposed.
